    About qatar

Qatar, officially the State of Qatar, sits on the north-eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It has a desert climate with hot summers, mild winters and low annual rainfall. The State has a population of 2.7 million* and its capital city is Doha.

According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Qatar has one of the world’s top 10 highest GDP per capita. Oil & gas remains the country’s main driver of economy, although measures are being introduced to diversify the economy and reduce the country’s dependence on the hydrocarbons.

Qatar is set to host the FIFA World Cup in 2022, the first World Cup to be held in the Arab world. The country is ramping up its infrastructure projects, including stadiums and the country’s first-ever metro, ahead of the tournament.

Some of the more popular, albeit pricey, residential areas for white-collar expats include West Bay, The Pearl, Al Dafna, Al Saad, Old Airport Area, Al Gharaffa and Al Waab. Accommodation ranges from apartments to villas, both within and outside compounds.  For more information about the best areas to move to in Doha, you can read our blog in the resource centre.

Qatar has many international schools, but the popular ones have long waiting lists, so plan in advance if possible to secure a place for your child.

While expat women are not required to wear an abaya or headscarf, they are encouraged to dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees.
