Migrating to a new country is a considerable challenge. Add to that the work needed to move with your pet and your to-do list gets significantly longer. That doesn't mean it has to be super stressful, though. With accurate knowledge of the requirements, you can gather the necessary documentation efficiently and ensure your pet is relocation-ready without undue hassle.
Below is a breakdown of the key requirements of pet relocation.
Microchips are mandatory and the only acceptable form of identification for pets. The microchip ID should be compliant with ISO Standards 11784 or 11785, though AVID 9 and 10 are currently accepted in the UAE, too. Make sure the microchip is implanted before the administration of the rabies vaccine.
All pets must be vaccinated for rabies at least 15 weeks prior to travel. You must have an original rabies certificate signed by the vet.
After at least 21 days after the rabies vaccine, and at least 12 weeks before your departure, pets must undergo a rabies antibody titer test at a government-approved facility. The purpose of the test is to ensure that the vaccine has brought your pet's rabies antibody levels up to an acceptable level. The results of the test must be 0.5 IU/ml or higher. It will be recorded against your pet's microchip ID and will be valid for a year.
Pets need additional vaccines before travelling. In the case of dogs, these include Canine Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza and Parvovirus (DHLPP). Cats require Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia (FVRCP).
It’s compulsory to have your pet’s health reviewed by an export vet within 10 days of travel. This appointment is an ideal time for your pet to receive internal and external treatment for parasites.
IATA has recommendations for container dimensions depending on pet size. In general, pets should be able to naturally and comfortably stand, sit and lie down in their containers.
Your pet shipper should be registered with the International Pet and Animal Transportation Association (IPATA). Ideally, your pet should be shipped before movers arrive to pack your house.
Ensure your documents are in order
Additional documents required to move your pet include an import permit and an international health certificate called APHIS Form 7001. A copy of your passport and a signed customs clearance form will also need to be submitted to the customs authorities.
